Data Centres In The UK To Be Classified As Critical National Infrastructure

Data centres in the UK are to be classified as critical national infrastructure, joining the emergency services, finance and healthcare systems, and energy and water supplies.

It means they would get extra government support during a major incident, such as a cyber attack, an IT outage or extreme weather, in order to minimise disruption.

Data centres are huge warehouses full of vast banks of computers that remotely power services such as artificial intelligence (AI) applications, data processing and streaming.

Their development has faced criticism over their energy and water use.

New PS5 Pro Console

After years of rumour, speculation and hype, Sony has confirmed it is launching a more powerful - and much more expensive - version of its hugely popular PlayStation 5 console.

The PS5 Pro will be able to show more advanced graphics and display the most demanding games at higher, more consistent frame rates.

But that added power will come at a cost: the PS5 Pro will be the most expensive console from Sony to date.

It launches on 7 November this year.

Online Platforms Overtaken TV For News

Online platforms have now overtaken TV for the first time as the most popular resource for news among adult consumers, at 71% versus 70%, according to new research from U.K. communications regulator Ofcom.

Ofcom’s larger conclusions may not be a surprise: Newspapers have been in trouble for decades; TV has faced pressure from streaming and online media in other categories like entertainment for years; and AI has a lot to answer for in areas like deepfakes and misinformation. Ofcom said it will use the conclusions to help determine what to focus its regulation on in the years ahead.

Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a pension fraud awareness campaign, warning people to protect their pension pots and investments from fraudsters, by encouraging the public to do their research before making changes to pension arrangements.

Pension fraud often includes free pension reviews, too good to be true investment opportunities, pension transfer opportunities, or offers to help release money from your pension ,even if you’re under 55.

Data also revealed April had the highest number of reported losses, accounting for 15% of total reported losses in 2023.
