Traffic Camera Hacked Down Hours After Installed

Traffic cameras put up on a major city route have been hacked down hours after being installed.

The device had been put up on the A3024 Northam Bridge in Southampton on Tuesday last week to monitor speed and red light offences.

It was fitted on the road's central island, which has been home to a conventional speed camera for several years, to capture two-way traffic across all lanes over the bridge.

The pole holding the new equipment was found sliced through on Wednesday morning, causing the T-shaped camera mount to topple and smash.

The cameras are designed to capture drivers who are going through red lights as well as telling how fast they are going.

CMA Investigating Google Having Too Much Power

The UK's competition watchdog has launched an investigation into whether Google has too much power in online search.

Google accounts for 90% of UK web searches - the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking at whether it is using that dominant position to harm competition or choice for users.

It is its first investigation after gaining new powers to investigate and enforce changes at firms it determines to have "strategic market status" in digital markets.

Google says it will cooperate with the investigation but has warned against what it calls "overly prescriptive digital competition rules."

🛡️ Security Corner 🛡️

Action Fraud has issued a new alert warning to look out for unusual messages or phishing emails from hotel accounts using  the booking.com platform.

Insight from Action Fraud reports suggests the individuals were defrauded after receiving unexpected messages and emails from a Booking.com account belonging to a hotel they had a reservation with, which had been taken over by a criminal.

Using this account, the criminals send in-app messages, emails, and WhatsApp messages to customers, deceiving them into making payment and/or requesting credit card details.

The specific account takeovers are likely to be the result of a targeted phishing attack against the hotel or accommodation provider, and not Booking.com’s backend system or infrastructure.

For more information and ways to protect yourself visit the Action Fraud’s website https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/alert/booking-com-alert
