Burnley voters call for the head of former teen Tameside councillor for his part in WhatsApp scandal

Constituents of former Tameside councillor and now Burnley MP Oliver Ryan have called for his sacking.

Twenty nine-year-old Ryan, from Ashton, has said 'sorry' for the comments he made on the Trigger Me Timbers Whatsapp group.

The MP - who was elected with a 300-majority last July said his messages were 'completely unacceptable' and he regretted not speaking out at the time.

Now voters in his Burnley, Padiham and Brierfield seat are calling for his head.

Taking to social media many say his position is 'untenable' and he should do the 'decent thing' and resign.

Facebook poster Karl Greenwood said: "Hopefully the spoilt, most unpopular and unwanted MP our town has ever had will now resign."

Mike Nitti added: "Hope he gets the boot too! Only got on the council because of Mummy, then parachuted into a vacant safe seat."

Clair Patterson said: "His position in Burnley is now completely untenable."

Lorraine Mehenna posted: "Sorry isn't good enough. He's a disgusting individual and not fit to serve our town. He needs to resign and go. Audenshaw didn't want him and we don't."

And Steven Whiteheart wrote: "Another vile student union MP - judging by his arrogant responses to constituents on fb this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest."

A Labour party source said would be spoken to by the party Whip and 'no action was off the table'.

Ryan was among local Labour party members who posted on the site  where Denton MP Andrew Gwynne shared sexist, racist and offensive messages about constituents and fellow MPs, including Diane Abbott and Ashton MP and deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

He was one of Tameside's youngest councillors when he was elected at the age of 19. He held the Audenshaw seat until 2022, and had two executive roles on Tameside Council responsible for the 'inadequate' Children’s Social Care Services and later Regeneration and Finance.

He joined the Labour Party at the age of 15 and is the son of Droylsden East councillor Laura Boyle.

In his statement, Mr Ryan said: "Some of the comments made in that group were completely unacceptable and I fully condemn them.

"I regret not speaking out at the time and I recognise that failing to do so was wrong.

"I did not see every message but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said.

"I also made some comments myself which I deeply regret and would not make today and for that I wholeheartedly apologise."

Denton MP Andrew Gwynne was sacked from his role as undersecretary for health after the group's posts were made public on Saturday.
