Changes to Tameside’s bin collections over Christmas and new year

People in Tameside could see changes to their bin collection dates over Christmas and New Year.

Tameside Council said there will be as little disruption as possible, but some households will see changes to their usual collection dates over the festive period. Brown bin collections will cease across the borough on Christmas Day and will not restart until Wednesday, January 8.

Normal service will resume for all bins from January 8.

Residents are being advised to download the council bin app for updates and alerts on Christmas waste and recycling collection arrangements. The local authority has also warned locals to park considerately so that bin wagons have clear access to all areas and roads where bins are kept.

Real Christmas trees can be recycled in aid of Willow Wood Hospice, Ashton, between January 6 and 10. Alternatively, chop it up and put it in your brown bin.

The council will collect any additional recyclable Christmas waste which is left out with your black or blue recycling bins if it’s in a clear or labelled bag.

Here is a breakdown of the collection date changes over the festive period:

Christmas Day (December 25)

  • If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday, December 27. If you are due a black (recycling) or a blue (paper) bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday, December 31.

Boxing Day (December 26)

  • If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Monday, December 30. If you are due a black or a blue bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday, January 2.

December 27, 30 and 31

  • Normal collections except for brown bins.

New Year’s Day (January 1, 2025)

  • If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Friday January 3. If you are due a black and/or blue bin collection, they will be collected on Monday, January 6.

January 2 to January 7

  • Normal collections except for brown bins.

Coun Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s executive member for environmental services and neighbourhoods, said: “Despite the holiday changes, people shouldn’t see too much disruption over Christmas, but please make sure you check the dates so you know the right day for the right bin.

“In addition, and on behalf of the council, I want to thank all the residents who protect the environment by recycling. Their efforts mean the amount of waste we send for disposal is as small as possible.

“Finally, I want to extend my thanks to our bin crews who work so hard not only over Christmas, but throughout the year and in all conditions.”
