Event which celebrated diverse women boosts Mayor's charity fund

Tameside Council's lead for equalities and cohesion, Cllr Taf Sharif teamed up with Noreen Shahzad of Umeed Women's Group and Leading Women in Business to host a fundraiser in support of the Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Betty Affleck’s chosen charities.

The event, themed "Celebrating Diverse Women," brought together a room full of inspiring individuals to share their personal journeys.

Highlights included an empowering line-up of speakers, a dazzling fashion show, live music, mouth-watering food, and fun games—creating a rich cultural festival that honoured the strength and resilience of women from all walks of life.

Among the speakers were Tameside’s own women leaders, Cllr Helen Bowden, Noreen Shahzad, and Tosin Arike, who each shared powerful messages of hope, unity, and perseverance—reminding everyone that no matter the struggles we face, we can rise together.

The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Betty Affleck said: “The festival was a celebration of the women from many backgrounds and cultures who contribute so much to making Tameside the welcoming, successful, unique place that it is.

"It was an afternoon filled with not only wonderful food and entertainment, but also with inspiration and invaluable lessons."

Cllr Sharif added: “I am deeply passionate about bringing people together to foster love, unity, and understanding.

"Tameside is home to a variety of communities, and this event is a tribute to the richness and diversity they bring to our borough. It’s a testament to the power of shared humanity and the importance of supporting one another.”

All funds raised during the event will go towards the Civic Mayor’s charity appeal, which benefits three causes: Friends of Tameside Young Carers, The Shed (a project supporting men at risk of isolation), and the East Manchester Community Boat Project based at Portland Basin in Ashton.
