A huge plan to make bin collections in Tameside more reliable includes four new wagons and staff.

Around 11 million binfuls of wasteand recyling are emptied each year in the borough.

An increase in the number of homes – and the rising population – means the service is struggling to cope with demand.

Rounds are frequently not completed, meaning bins then have to be emptied the following day.

Some £1.8m has been put aside by council bosses for new wagons and staff; as well as new tech to help maximise route efficiency.

Plans also include the roll-out of food waste recycling collections to rural homes and flats not currently served by April 2026.

Executive member for environmental services and neighbourhoods Coun Laura Boyle said: “It’s brilliant to see we’re performing well when compared to other councils but there’s always room for improvement – no one wants missed bin collections  – so we want to make sure we’re doing what we can to provide the best possible service to residents.

“This investment will help us get more bin crews out and complete more rounds while also having technology in our bin wagons to help make the rounds more efficient, improve communication and improve health and safety.

“We have several more steps to follow to ensure we get the best value for our money, so we won’t see the changes right away but this is really good news for the long term delivery of the service.

“In the meantime, my thanks goes to our waste team and crews for their hard work, day in and day out, in serving our local community.”
