LIVE: Georgia Taylor-Brown wins Olympics bronze in triathlon mixed relay

Droylsden triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown has won Tameside's second bronze medal of the Paris Olympics.

She was part of the Team GB quartet that also included Alex Yee, Sam Dickinson and anchor Beth Potter, which claimed a dramatic third place in this morning’s triathlon mixed relay, losing out on silver by millimetres.

Germany’s Laura Lindemann led the field home, just fractions ahead of the USA’s Taylor Knibb and GB’s Beth Potter, who replicated their silver and bronze finishes in last week’s individual event.

In contrast to the gruelling solo triathlons, the team relay saw each competitor swim for 300 metres, before a 7km bike section and a 1.8km run.

Men’s individual gold medallist, Yee, handed Team GB a slender lead at the end of the first leg, thanks in part to French favourite Pierre Le Corre crashing his bike and coming into the changeover 40 seconds behind.

The peloton worked to slash the advantage Taylor-Brown built on her swim along the Seine, with Germany’s Lisa Tertsch catching her on the run-in.

Sam Dickinson matched Lasse Luhrs stroke-for-stroke in the water and pedal-for-pedal on the bike, but a herculean effort saw him overhaul the German in a sprint for the final change, giving Team GB a five-second lead going into the final leg.

Knibb and Lindemann co-operated to eat away the 12-second gap Potter grew on her bike, reeling her in by the final transition.

The last 1,800 metres was nip and tuck the whole way, but after 1 hour 25 minutes of relentless competition, it came down to the finest of margins between the three athletes, who finished within a second of each other.

Controversy ensued, though, with Team GB originally being given the nod for second place, before the Americans were promoted in a photo finish.

With this bronze, 30-year-old Taylor-Brown, who attended Fairfield High School for Girls, now had a full set of Olympic medals after winning silver in the individual triathlon and gold in the mixed relay at the Tokyo Games.

It also means that Tameside is level in the medal table with Moldova and the Dominican Republic.
