Mossley Hollins students celebrate GCSE results day

Mossley Hollins High School reported outstanding achievements for students receiving their GCSEs this morning.

More than 70 per cent of the cohort achieved a strong pass in English and 80 per cent achieved a standard pass for Maths.

Nell Sedgwick and Mae Traynor were the highest performing students in the school, with exceptional performance also noted from Jennifer Hallam who achieved three 9's and five 8's.

Nell and Mae will both be starting at Ashton Sixth Form College (ASFC) to study Maths, Biology and Chemistry.

Alfie Jones, the highest performing boy, was happy with his grades as he said he had revised a lot and felt he'd put the work in. He's now also looking forward to studying Physics, Further Maths and Criminology at ASFC.

The school noted "astonishing progress" from Amber Earls, Lucy Nolan, Madeline Crosby, Reuben Ryder, Jorge Ingman and David Oruma Stephen, all of whom performed at a level way above expectations.

David will now be progressing on to study Maths, Physics and Engineering at Clarendon Sixth Form.

Holly Dewsnap, who had both tonsillitis and glandular fever throughout Year 11, achieved two 9's, four 8's, two 7's and two 6's as well as a Level 2 Distinction in Dance. She was "over the moon" to open her results this morning and said she had expected them to be much lower after being out of school for months at a time, but felt her hard work and hours of revision had paid off.

Holly is now hoping to study Biology, Chemistry and Psychology or Maths at Laurus Ryecroft before progressing onto a degree in Medicine.

Taylor Williams, who was forced out of her family home after last year's tornado, was thrilled to achieve a distinction in Dance along with six 6's, one 5 and one 4. In September, she will begin her career in dance at a specialist college.

Vanessa Thomas, whose son received his results today, said: "I can't believe it, I'm just feeling absolutely elated - it was unexpected really, I thought he'd done well but I'm just bursting with pride. He's done better than he thought which, to me, is everything. He's started an apprenticeship in Accounting this week and will be going to college in September to do his AAT. This is like the icing on the cake, I'll have to get some balloons tonight to embarrass him."

A Mossley Hollins spokesperson said: "We are so very proud of [the students] and what they have achieved, we will miss them dearly, but know that they are going to go on and continue to be successful as they transition to the next stage of their education and/or training.

"They have worked extremely hard and risen to so many challenges to secure results which will allow them to take the next steps into education, training or employment. We are very much looking forward to hearing of the continued success of our students at college and beyond."
