Rhododendrons to no-dodendrons on Kinder Scout

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) are appealing for volunteers to help them clear rhododendron bushes from Kinder Scout.

Although it is native to many regions of the world, the ornamental evergreens are an invasive species in Britain after being introduced by Victorian plant collectors on country estates.

Rhododendrons are running amok on the western slopes of Kinder Scout, and the BMC are preparing to eradicate them from woodland above Little Hayfield on Tuesday, August 20.

“Although attractive to look at, rhododendrons are an invasive species, which outcompete all native plants, so nothing grows underneath, reducing biodiversity,” said a statement from the group.

“With heavy rain the bare peat underneath washes away, adding to erosion, reducing quality of drinking water and increasing flood risk.

“We want to keep the peat on the hill where it stores huge amounts of carbon.”

The BMC asks that volunteers wear waterproofs and boots with good grip, as much of the work will be on steep hillsides and is likely to be muddy, and enough food and drink to last for a full day.

They also warn that removing rhododendrons can be a challenge.

“Removing rhododendron plans is not for the faint-hearted and they can be very difficult to remove, even apparently small plants.

“We will be giving some safety tips at the beginning of the session, but be careful with your footing, especially on steep slopes.”

The team will meet at the Sett Valley car park in Hayfield at 9:30am and expect to be on site until around 3:00pm.
