Speed limit campaigners say '20 is plenty'

A campaign for a 20mph speed limit through Tintwistle and Hollingworth is receiving enthusiastic support from local residents.

When the A57 Link Roads are built, traffic on the A628 going though these villages will increase, say campaigners.

High Peak Green New Deal and Glossopdale Action for Sustainable Travel have been leafleting houses in the two villages, proposing a lower speed limit to improve safety.

Residents’ responses have included: ‘This is a perfect idea’, ‘20mph would be a blessing’, ‘Definitely needs to happen’ and ‘20mph is 100 per cent necessary’.

Many people also said that speed cameras were essential and traffic lights at the New Road junction before someone is killed there.

Several residents felt that a 20mph limit was not enough and that heavy lorries should not be going though the villages at all.

There were suggestions that HGV’s should be made to pay a toll to pass through, or be banned altogether and sent round the M62.

“A strictly enforced 20mph limit would mean less damage to the houses lining the road, less noise and greater safety,”  said Anne Robinson, spokewoman for the campaign.

“We will be writing to National Highways in the New Year to urge them to include this speed limit in their Village Gateway plans.

“We campaigned to stop the new roads being built’ said Linda Walker of High Peak Green New Deal.

“It would have been so much better to invest the £250 million in public transport. But now the road building is set to go ahead, we hope that a lower speed limit through their villages could make life a little more bearable for the people of Hollingworth and Tintwistle.”
