Two Tameside outlets have been honoured in the National Curry Awards.
The awards celebrated the UK’s curry industry at a special ceremony at the House of Lords.
And top honours were won by two local eateries.
Paprika Takeaway, Talbot Road, Newton, Hyde won the ‘Takeaway of the Year’, North West Award 2024.
Meanwhile, Vevas Indian Restaurant, Castle Street, Stalybridge, won the ‘Restaurant of the Year’ title.
The Asian catering industry is valued at approximately £4-5 billion and employs between 80,000 to 100,000 workers. But the industry is facing a significant decline due to the shortage of skilled workers and a lack of investment in training.
As a result, the National Curry Awards (NCA) aims to aid the encouragement of new generations to become more inspired and involved with the industry again.
The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Westminster City Councillor Robert Rigby said at the awards: “It is wonderful to see the NCA recognise the hard work of all those who bring such us exquisite food, and to see the NCA’s own hard work inspiring new generations to help keep the UK’s curry and Asian catering industries thriving for many centuries more.”
Awards founder, Ahad Chowdhury, added: “This prestigious event honours the outstanding contributions of chefs, restaurateurs, and businesses who have played a vital role in the UK’s curry and Asian catering industries. The NCA celebrates the rich culinary heritage and vibrant community within the culinary community industry.”
