The site of a former police station in Mottram could soon be transformed into new homes.
Before being demolished in 2012, the base had fallen into ruin. Now Onward Homes wants to build 14 houses where it once stood.
The developer says all the new homes will be high-quality, affordable, and have three bedrooms. If planning permission is approved by the council, the homes will be available for either affordable rent, rent-to-buy or shared ownership, to help meet identified housing needs in the local area.
The site, off Market Place, will benefit from a mix of off-street and communal parking. Each home would have its own private garden as well as access to open public space, according to the developers.
Planning papers read: “At the heart of this proposal are the principles of good design, desirability and intent of creating a sustainable community where people want to live. The high quality architectural design will provide visually attractive and energy efficient homes which are of an appropriate layout, scale and surrounded by effective landscaping.
“The intended proposal will blend fluently into the surrounding conservation area demonstrating a unique, contemporary, aesthetic influenced by the surrounding buildings. The proposed development will establish and maintain a strong sense of place, creating an attractive, welcoming and distinctive housing development which aims to reduce its impact on the environment and local ecosystems.”
Onward Homes is also nearing completion of 161 new homes in nearby Hattersley, including homes for affordable rent, shared ownership and a 91-bed extra care scheme, called Birch Lea Park.
Proposals for the former police station site went to consultation last year. Now plans have been officially submitted to Tameside Council.
