Alex takes a look at a survey of the top 10 favourite comedy films and tells us what movies he's planning to watch at the cinema.
A new poll has been carried out by Showcase Cinemas, and film fans have voted Mrs Doubtfire as their favourite comedy of all time. Robin Williams has also topped the survey of our most-loved comedy actors. He is much missed. Jennifer Saunders leads the pack for the female stars, with no sign of Dawn French in the rankings. A scandal, Vicar!
Mrs Doubtfire got an impressive 17 per cent of the vote, seeing off strong rib-tickling competition from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Airplane, which starred king of the one-liners and visual gags Leslie Nielsen. He's one of those stars who just makes you smile as soon as he appears in a scene, before he's even said anything!
Here is the rest of the Top 10:
5 - The Hangover
6 - Meet The Parents
7 - The Naked Gun
8 - The Blues Brothers
9 - Hot Fuzz
10 - Shaun Of The Dead
The most shocking thing about this survey is that Dave Sweetmore, my Tameside Radio colleague, has only seen ONE of the ten funniest films! He's watched Hot Fuzz, with ex-007 Timothy Dalton on fine form as the devilish supermarket boss, but that's it. Unbelievable!
I think we need to book Dave a week off, and go down to Blockbuster to get him the other nine films out, along with a big pile of snacks.
In other news, you'll notice I've not managed to review anything new again this week. With moving house being top of my agenda, I simply haven't made it to the pictures. I plan to rectify that this week, and have at least a couple to tell you about in seven days' time. Top of my list is Brendan Fraser in The Whale, which centres around a reclusive English teacher who suffers from severe obesity and attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, in a final bid for redemption. It looks really powerful from the trailer, and I'm hoping to see it this weekend!
Also out this weekend, Knock At The Cabin, which sees a young girl and her parents taken hostage by four armed strangers and asked to make an unthinkable choice. It's the latest outing for M Night Shyamalan, and plays on the family's isolation from the outside world. There are no reviews yet, but I'm hopeful it's decent!
I still haven't managed to spend three hours with Margot Robbie watching Babylon, but I hope to fit that in too. Finally, Puss In Boots : The Last Wish looks like it might be more enjoyable than the rather terrible The Enforcer, Banderas' last cinematic outing, whilst Plane and The Fabelmans continue for a second week. Oh, and Unwelcome apparently features murderous goblins lurking in a gnarled, ancient wood. Sounds more lethal than a Putin phone call to Boris Johnson.
Before I watch any of that, I might splash out on Mrs Doubtfire for Dave. The DVD is a mere £4.90 on Amazon. Bargain!
