I am not a huge fan of gory horror films, in all honesty. I prefer jump scares, haunted houses, and creepy corridors. I'm actually the jumpiest person I know, and my wife refuses to watch this type of film with me!
For this week's review, I'm handing over the blood-spattered fountain pen to self-confessed Saw fangirl Sayeh Stone, who is our guest reviewer. She writes...
Having watched all of the Saw films, I have huge respect for the pure genius behind this franchise, and the kind of mind it takes to create it. If you love horror on a different level, with a huge dollop of blood and gore, delivered in a clever and savage way, then these films are for you. In light of this, I watched Saw X with great anticipation.
Sadly, this lacked the intensity of previous films. The traps were tired, and didn't leave you hiding behind your eyes, or even flinching very much. The gap between the victims completing the challenge and the timer was too close, so you knew they wouldn't complete it, leaving the element of suspense rather lacking as a result. I felt like an outsider watching the film, rather than being sucked into the whole game as has happened in previous outings.
This time round, you also felt sympathy for John Cramer, and almost a sense of justification for what he was doing. There were some funny moments, which broke the silence in the cinema, but the addition of comical one liners in a Saw film gave it a whole different feel, which for me just didn't work. It was an easy watch that felt a bit silly at times, but I was pretty disappointed overall. As for the special effects, without giving too much away, one victim's corpse looked more like a mannequin than a realistic body! Not much to hide behind your popcorn for.
Other reviews have said it's the best yet, but I'd say this is tame, and nowhere near the best Saw film in the line up. As much as I wanted to award it a ten, seeing as it's titled Saw X, it's a solid four for me! You'll need to feed your curiosity and see if for yourself though, especially if you've seen the previous films in the series.
Thanks Sayeh! It does sound like I needn't have worried too much about the gore in the latest Saw addition. I did watch Jigsaw a few years ago, and a couple of the more grisly scenes stuck in my mind for ages afterwards. I'm definitely more a fan of chills than gore. I can't really deal with blood and guts, and even find watching Casualty impossible. It explains why I quickly concluded as a kid I wasn't going to be a doctor, and perhaps I should play records for a living instead. Next time, we look at one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in years, The Creator, plus Expendables 4 and The Lesson. Happy film watching! Don't have nightmares.
