I accidentally watched Dream Scenario for a second time this week, having visited a different Cineworld in Nottingham and not checked my ticket properly.
I sat down, switched off my phone, and got nice and settled in my seat before I realised, so my review of Saltburn will have to wait until next week. I can confirm, however, that Cage's performance in this slightly mad film stands up very well to a second viewing! It remains one of my favourites of the year.
Four to mention this week, and I'll start with the strongest. Anatomy Of A Fall is a gripping French drama, which sees a woman end up in court after her husband falls to his death from the top balcony of their isolated chalet in the French Alps. Much of the movie plays out in court, but it's anything but stuffy. The acting is superb, the snowy setting adds to the chilly winds blowing through a troubled marriage, and like the very best twisty crime novels, it keeps you guessing right to the very end.
Next up, the weakest. I found Sumotherhood cringeworthy and unfunny. The kindest thing I can say is that I enjoyed Jennifer Saunders' bit. I don't ever want to relive the scene where Ed Sheeran's character answers nature's call in a bush. I know humour is subjective, but I don't think I laughed once at this one. A redeeming feature is a positive take on mental health, but sadly this was lost in a sea of gags that misfired more than my old Mini.
Trolls Band Together is a crowd pleaser for all ages, with plenty of retro songs to keep the parents singing along, a decent script, some funny digs at boy band culture, and all neatly packaged in a colourful, action-packed 90 minutes, so doesn't outstay its welcome. Considering it's the third movie in the Trolls universe (the second went straight to steaming during the pandemic), this far exceeded my expectations! Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick are on fine form, whilst Kid Cudi and Amy Schumer are definite voice highlights elsewhere in the star-studded cast. Sweet but not overly saccharine, and an easy watch for all the family. It even reunited actual NSYNC for their first single in over 20 years!
Finally this week, The Marvels has flopped at the Box Office, with a 78% drop in Box Office takings following its opening week. I don't think the disappointing numbers do it justice at all. I really enjoyed the ride into space watching this one, with Brie Larson, Teyona Paris, and Iman Vellani all clearly having a blast filming it. Strong female lead characters, dazzling space special effects, and cats swallowing people using their hidden large tentacles to get them off a spaceship safely...what's not to love?! The cat scene was mad but brilliant. It definitely deserved to do better, and maybe it will find its audience when it lands on Disney Plus .That could happen for the festive season with a bit of luck.
