Dave Sweetmore column: The rise and rise of Alex Spencer

BRIGHT FUTURE: Alex has plenty planned for 2023.

The Tameside Radio presenter sings the praises of a local lad who has become one of the most talked about names on the North West music scene.

On my last Tameside Radio Monday night show of 2022, Droylsden’s favourite musical son Alex Spencer joined us in the studio for an interview and live session, which is still available to watch on the station’s Facebook page.

The 15-year-old singer songwriter, who it feels like has been around forever, has, over the last couple of years, become one of the most recognised and talked about names on the North West music scene.

Often referred to as ‘the lad who busks in Manchester City Centre’, for the time he spends playing outside the Arndale Centre, he’s had the likes of Liam Gallagher and Lady Gaga sing his praises on their social media platforms.

He’s released two amazing singles, ‘Things Just Come and Go’ and ‘The Morning Times’, both receiving a great deal of radio airplay around the country, and praise from many in the music industry.

Last year he played to 20,000 people at a packed out AO Arena in Manchester, and was also a special guest of the Manchester City first team staff and management, playing at the team’s Premier League Champions Civic reception.

Along with his band, which features Will Harvey and Drew Cyprus, 2023 looks like being an exciting year for him.

In the interview he promised more new music will be released soon, with more live dates announced as the year goes on.

On Friday 3 February, Alex will be joining Concrete Forest, Echo Beach, and Felix Hill, at a special ‘spotlight’ event taking place at Manchester Academy 3, where he will play a live set for respected music promoters ‘Scruff Of The Neck’.

Tickets are on sale now from the venue website.

He’s also lined up to play at the Made In Manchester festival which takes place at Astley Sports Village in Dukinfield on 27 May this year, alongside some of the country’s leading tribute bands, plus other local bands and musicians.

The future for Alex Spencer is as big as he wants it to be, and he has already cemented himself in the Tameside history books as one of the area’s best loved indie rock and roll musicians.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him, and for those not already familiar with him, I definitely recommend getting to one of his gigs, and following him across his social media pages.

The new music he’s promised is definitely one of the things I’m most looking forward to hearing in 2023.
