A touching 80s' drama is currently drawing in the crowds at The Lowry in Salford.

Steel Magnolias, led by a glittering cast, tells the story of a group of women who gather at a downtown hair salon in Louisana in America’s deep south.

The women, led by hairdresser Truvy, meet every few weeks to discuss the dramas that are going on in their lives, while they have their hair and nails done.

We first meet the group on the morning of the wedding of Shelby Eatenton, played by Diana Vickers. The group of six women, of varying ages, discuss the matters of the day and the men in their lives.

It is typical gathering of women, who are all good friends, as they gossip and delve into each others’ lives.

We then encounter the same group over the next few month as they move on with talk of babies, health problems, men and general chat.

Each woman looks out for the other as this band of mismatched females laugh and cajole each other along.

Truvy, played by Lucy Speed, who was the star of the show for me, was equally dipsy and funny in equal measures as she flutters around her clients.

Shelby’s mother, M’Lynn Eatenton, played by Laura Main, who is currently on TV in Call the Midwife, played the angst-ridden mum down to a tee as she worried about her offspring.

Harriet Thorpe played Ouiser Boudreaux, the wealthy ex-mayoress of the town, who had everyone’s interest at heart.

While Elizabeth Ayodele played new assistant Annelle and Caroline Harker played boisterous Clairee.

The whole ensemble had great chemistry and shone in their roles. The play is staged in a wooden-panelled 80s’ hair salon throughout, which worked very well.

Steel Magnolias is a perfect night out, it runs until Saturday.
