The best Christmas films to watch on Netflix this year

Trawling endlessly through the festive film titles, unsure where to begin? Spoilt for choice by the cookie-cutter rom coms and much-loved classics?

December bears many cherished traditions, but a universal favourite is watching the Christmas films we adore year after year. Home Alone, Nativity, Elf, The Grinch… so many films come to mind that we just can’t get enough of.

So with Christmas in full swing, here is a list of the best Christmas films you can stream on Netflix this year.

Starting off with a charming festive love story, Love Hard delves into the life of a writer who - after meeting her seemingly perfect match on a dating app - flies across the country to surprise him for Christmas, only to find he’s not quite what his profile may suggest. The heart-warming comedy follows a creative, down-to-earth storyline with a dose of Hallmark movie cheesiness with a modern spin.

The Christmas Chronicles follows the story of siblings, Kate and Teddy, who hatch a plan to capture Santa Clause, but things don’t go exactly as planned. With excellent cinematic quality and Kurt Russell portraying an endearing Father Christmas, the film has become an annual tradition for numerous families and been labelled ‘a good candidate to become a Christmas Classic’.

Another more recent film, released last year, is Single All the Way. In an effort to avoid his family’s judgement regarding his love life, Peter convinces his best friend Nick to pose as his boyfriend on a seasonal visit home. But when his family begin to play matchmaker, things take a surprising turn. This award-winning film is the first of its kind focusing primarily on a queer couple. It’s sweet, cheerful, cheesy and cliché - it’s how every holiday rom com should be.

Holiday Rush tells the tale of a widowed radio DJ who loses his job and exchanges his family’s privileged lifestyle for one far more basic just before Christmas.  This feel-good film truly brings the Christmas spirit and encourages gratitude to its audience.

The final film Robin Robin may seem familiar as it was created & produced by the makers of Wallace & Gromit. This charming stop-motion special tells the story of a young robin, raised by mice, who is questioning where she belongs. After making a heartfelt wish on a Christmas star, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery. It is beautifully animated and a perfect story, lasting the perfect length with a mere 30-minute run time.
