Hayfield Primary School on Swallow House Lane played host to this year’s Apple Day on Saturday, October 12 as part of the village’s showcase of sustainability.
Visitors enjoyed a sunny afternoon where they could sample some varieties of the popular fruit, with freshly pressed apple juice from this year’s orchard crop on offer.
The event’s organisers, Sustainable Hayfield, hosted displays reflecting their important work on biodiversity, energy and transport, promoting their slogan of “Working together for a brighter future.
The Apple Day celebrations included allotment displays, a clothes swap, children’s ‘apple Olympics’, an art show, storytelling and woodland activities.
There were also talks on apple grafting, beekeeping and woodland management, while live music performances set the tone for the afternoon.
Apple Day is a UK festivity that was launched in 1990 to celebrate the country’s rich fruit heritage. This year, it officially falls on October 21, but events are organised to celebrate Apple Day throughout the month.
