Buxton Museum's plight raised with government minister

The plight of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery has been raised at a national level with a government minister.

The museum on Terrace Road was forced to close indefinitely at the start of June for safety reasons, due to the discovery of dry rot in the structural timbers in ceilings and floor joists.

It was to the disappointment of many local residents and tourists, but Derbyshire County Council's leader has said there is "absolute commitment" to supporting the museum and securing the future of the service.

High Peak's Conservative MP Robert Largan has met this week with Lucy Frazer, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

She had already made representations with the Arts Council about the situation and said she is committed to working with MP Largan, Derbyshire County Council and others to get the museum open again as soon as possible.

The borough's MP said he welcomes the intervention from the Secretary of State, bringing national attention to one of the High Peak's most significant attractions.

"Like many others, I was really sad to see that the Museum has had to close," Mr Largan said.

"Derbyshire County Council are working hard to find ways to get the museum open again but I wanted to raise this problem at a national level too. I’m really pleased that the Secretary of State has already acted so quickly to try to help.

"I’ll continue to work with everyone to find a way to get Buxton Museum open again and keep standing up for our local arts, culture and history."
