A fundraising campaign has been launched to convert the upstairs of Hadfield Conservative Club into a community room for everyone to use.

The space used to be a factory which made gloves, but since it closed down the room has fallen into disrepair.

Club stewardess Jane Grimsley said: “Ideally we want to install a wheelchair lift so it can be accessible to all. 

“We do need to raise a lot of money though as the roof has collapsed and there are structural issues. The Association of Conservative Clubs will hopefully be able to help us with a loan to carry out the structural work.”

Jane is also appealing to people for their memories of the building. 

They have already found old equipment used in the glove works and it’s believed it was a boxing club before that.

She even came across an old newspaper cutting featuring an 80th birthday held in the room.

Jane said: “We tend to go by the name of HCC as people can be put off if we call it the Conservative Club. We’re not political in any way. 

“It’s more of a members’ group where we just get together and have fun. 

“I’m currently in the process of writing to local businesses to see if they can help us out with our fund raising efforts. We’re looking for donations as well as raffle prizes and items we can auction.

“We’ve also been holding various events at the club to raise money. 

“We’ve already held a Christmas Fair and there will be a Santa’s Grotto on December 12, which we hope will add to our total.”
