Cash to bolster green energy

The High Peak Borough Council has received over half a million pounds in funding to bolster green energy within the borough.

The Council secured £587,000 from Sport England last week, which it hopes will see a reduction in carbon missions and a greener future for the borough.

The car park at MyActive New Mills closed on Monday (3rd March) as works are carried out. A range of solar panels are set to be installed onto the leisure centre roof, with equipment upgrades set to follow.

Following the development, the Council has also expressed interest in further improvements to the centre.

In a consultation held in January, High Peak Council outlined ideas for an extension on the leisure centre gym, which they say will help target younger people and families.

They also discussed converting the swimming pool viewing area into a social space, with the possibility for food and beverages to be offered.

The Energy Efficiency Project currently underway is set to finish in mid-June.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "This important project will reduce the carbon emissions at the leisure centre and make a significant contribution to our net zero target. So I'm pleased that we're now getting underway.

"Together with our colleagues at MyActive and the contractor, we'll be working with customers and local businesses to keep any future disruption to a minimum."
