Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week by singing in a choir

Hannah Brine.

Monday (9 May) is the start of Mental Health Awareness Week. This year's focus is loneliness and one way people can combat it is through singing in a choir.

High Peak Singers, in Hayfield, launches on Monday. This is a community choir, meaning there are no auditions, and repertoire will range from folk songs to classical, pop to jazz and everything else in between.

Hannah Brine, founder, said: "Singing in a choir is all about being together. We all sometimes feel lonely, and singing in a choir is a great way to meet new people. Singing has lots of proven benefits, including the release of endorphins which reduce stress and anxiety levels and contribute to a positive mental state.

"The joint sense of purpose created by coming together in harmony as a group boosts mood and overall well being. I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone on Monday evening."

High Peak Singers rehearse weekly on Mondays during term time from 7pm to 8.30pm at Hayfield Village Hall.
