The rules are changing at Glossop Cemetery to make sure it's kept tidy.
An open letter from High Peak Borough Council’s Cemetery Officer Terry Redfern has been displayed around the area.
In it he says: “It has been observed that an increasing number of graves are being furnished with unauthorised edgings, containers, pots and ornaments.
“This is starting to prevent the mowing teams from carrying out their work effectively and can lead to deterioration in standards of grave maintenance.”
There is now a request that people remove unauthorised items from the graves.
This includes removing all edgings, all items from the surface of the grave and any shrubs or bedding plants.
In future only two flower containers will be allowed per grave, and these have to be placed on to the gravestone base rather than on the grave itself.
Mr Redfern added: “The regulations are displayed around the cemetery.
“We would rather have the support of all grave owners in this endeavour rather than to compulsorily enforce our regulations which clearly state that creating gardens or placing articles onto the grave surface is not allowed.”
Further meetings are to be held to decide the timescale of the changes.
