Helping schoolchildren mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee have been members of Charlesworth WI.
Members joined forces with the head teacher and staff at Charlesworth VC Primary School to provide Jubilee entertainment for the pupils.
Two members were able to chat with the children about their own memories of the Queen’s Coronation and experiences of being an evacuee during the war.
Staff had decorated the playground with bunting and set out tables in the best street party tradition.
The ladies of the WI created a 50’s style tea complete with sandwiches made from potted beef, jam, and egg, accompanied by sticky cakes and gallons of orange squash.
There was a lot of memorabilia for the children to see, including gas masks, a Coronation radio, an original copy of the Coronation radio times, ration books, a Commemorative tumbler and lots of village photos.
Each child was given a flag, a pencil, and a bag of sweets all carefully weighed out to represent half of what a week’s sweetie ration would have been.
For the WI, the celebrations continued with their annual garden party held in the beautiful garden of one of the members.
Members will be showcasing their skills later this month in various competitions being contested at the County Show on Sunday 26 June at the County Showground, on Borrowash Road in Elvaston.
