Council chairman to make call on extraordinary care homes meeting

Derbyshire Labour leader Dr Joan Dixon with the signed request for an extraordinary council meeting.

Opposition councillors are waiting to hear if an extraordinary meeting will be called following a decision to close seven care homes - including Goyt Valley House in New Mills.

Derbyshire County Council’s Tory Cabinet members made the controversial call in a meeting last week, and immediately after opposition members acted against it.

The Lib Dems and Green Party member called for an extraordinary meeting to ‘condemn’ the decision and ‘regret the direction of travel it establishes for care service provision’, while Labour called for a reversal of the decision and the implementation of ‘the majority group’s manifesto commitment to invest in providing new modern care homes before any home is closed’.

The democratic process was initially stalled as the authority stipulated both requests needed to be signed by each supporting councillor, which has since been done.

Chairman Trevor Ainsworth now has until Monday (16 May) to assess each request and decide whether to call a meeting.
