Local children’s choir Dark Peak Young Voices is inviting children who enjoy singing for a Christmas Party and Open Evening on Tuesday 10th December at the Victoria Hall, Glossop 6-7pm.

As well as a chance to hear the choir in action there will be a chance for everyone to sing Christmas favourites and to enjoy a bring-and-share party. Parents are welcome to stay for the event and there will be mulled wine and mince pies for adults.

Dark Peak Young Voices Choir is in its third year and welcomes all children from ages 7 to 17 with groups for two levels based on age.

The group practises regularly on Tuesday evenings (5-6.30pm) during term time at the Victoria Hall in Glossop, with a wide variety of songs from popular classics to numbers from stage and screen the children also enjoy choreography sessions with a leading musical theatre specialist.

Under its director, professional opera singer Claire Surman, the 30-strong group performs regularly in concerts in venues such as the Octagon in Buxton alongside the other orchestras and bands in the Dark Peak Music Foundation. This year they are planning to enter Music for Youth and are hoping to win themselves a place to perform in the National Festival at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, one of the finest concert halls in Europe.

The Choir’s director, Claire Surman said: “Singing is a wonderful thing for children to do. It is well known that singing in a choir promotes physical and mental health, as well as being lots of fun! We place the children's well-being at the forefront of everything we do. In addition to exploring fantastic music, learning vocal technique and developing general musicianship, we want to nurture the children's personal development – having fun, making new friends and helping them develop confidence in themselves.

“Our rehearsals and concerts give children a wonderful opportunity to develop the important skills of both fitting in, and standing out; to shine as individuals whilst contributing to the success of the entire group, gaining a sense of accomplishment through teamwork.”
