Davis Blank Furniss to stage free legal event

Sarah Taylor and Sean Hackett

The Glossop and Manchester-based law firm is running a free seminar in Glossop for residential landlords and letting agents.

They will be diving into the upcoming changes to legislation, helping landlords to avoid costly disputes. The event will be led by Sean Hackett and Sarah Taylor - two leading property lawyers. We met with Sarah at their Glossop office to find out more...

I grew up in Glossop, and Davis Blank Furniss have been here for ever! How long have they been around and how long have you worked for them Sarah?

We’ve been here in Glossop for more than 150 years and I’ve been with them for just under four years now. I did my training contract with the firm and qualified about two years ago.

Davis Blank Furniss are hosting a special event, ‘Residential Landlord & Tenant Law: Is your house in order?’ - who is this aimed at?

Anyone who is involved in the residential, landlord and tenant sector, so that could be private landlords, property agents, letting agents and tenants. Also people who are considering getting involved and just want to know more about the changes that they need to be aware of. What we really want to do is demystify the changes that are about to be brought in, because we know that a lot of current landlords and agents, and even tenants, are going to be unsure of how all this will affect them.

What information can attendees expect to find out about?

We’ll be talking about the changes to the possession process, the new contractual term of tenancies, buy-to-let mortgages, the new obligations for landlords under the Renters’ Rights Bill, which will include the new private rental database and the new ombudsman. There will be an opportunity to ask our property law experts any questions at the end of the session. There will also be a complimentary buffet and drinks will be served, during which guests will have the opportunity to network and exchange experiences with each other.

A lot of our readers will be tenants, so how is this new legislation going to affect them?

The Renters’ Rights Bill is there to give better protection to the tenants. On the flip side, that does mean that things have got more complicated for landlords, and that’s why Davis Blank Furniss want to break down the changes for everyone and provide clear guidance that people can take away and implement.
