Proposals to restore and repair the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir in Whaley Bridge, that in the summer of 2019 was in danger of collapse, look set to be given the go-ahead next week.
The plans are due before members of High Peak Borough Council’s Development Control Committee and are recommended for approval, subject to over 40 conditions.
This major application by the Canal and River Trust is expected to cost between £12 million and £16 million and could take two years to complete.
It features construction of a new concrete channel across the body of the dam. Water would run between a newly constructed weir and tumble bay, into the channel, through a pair of turret structures.
The spillway would in part cross the site of the existing buildings, car park and boat storage area used by Toddbrook Sailing Club.

The proposal therefore also includes a replacement sailing club facility, including a new club house, storage building for power boats, car parking for members and the public, boat storage areas, and a new vehicular access onto Reservoir Road.
Also included in the scheme are improvements to the dam infrastructure including installing valves on the reservoir outlet pipes and modifications to the dam’s clay core.
The development has resulted in more than 45 letters being sent with 22 objections, 19 making observations and five in support.
Concerns raised include the need for the works, flood risk, management of construction traffic and pedestrian safety, accessibility concerns during construction phase, visual and landscape impacts of the works.

Among the supportive comments, included in the report, was one from a resident who will be directly impacted by the works with noise, dirt/dust, vibration, and vehicular access.
But they stated: "However, having looked at the plans and the limited choice of access to the site, I support this application.”
During construction, a works compound comprising of site offices, staff facilities, parking and plant and material storage would be formed accessed via a one-way route.
The plans also include the removal of a number of trees, and play equipment from the park would be temporarily relocated and available to use on an area adjacent to the football pitch.
The meeting of the Development Control Committee is due to be held at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens on Monday (7 March) at 1.30pm.
