Derbyshire Council to treat 63 roads across Derbyshire

Derbyshire County Council will use micro asphalt to treat 63 roads across Derbyshire, covering 92,000 square metres at a total cost of £1.1 million pounds.

Micro asphalt can extend the life of the road surface by up to 10 years and improve skid resistance.

The work is part of the council's ongoing highways capital programme and is a preventative treatment to maximise the road’s lifespan. The micro asphalt repair programme is part of this year’s £27 million investment in roads, pavements and transport across the county.

Micro asphalt seals the road surface and prevents water causing any further damage, especially in freezing conditions. It can be laid in as little as 20 minutes, helping to minimise inconvenience for local residents and road users.

Micro asphalt is applied cold, making it ideal to lay in cooler weather conditions as low as 5°C. The weather needs to be dry, which can lead to last minute changes to the programme, meaning the council may have to postpone some repairs if it's raining.

The material is laid over the existing road surface and includes stones of varying sizes and cement, mixed into liquid bitumen. The process is able to fill minor potholes to create a smooth new road surface.

DCC will drop leaflets door-to-door in areas where they'll carry out the repairs, and erect warning signs in advance, to make sure people are aware of when the works will take place.

To help complete the micro asphalt with minimum inconvenience and on time, the council are asking people to:

  • Park your car on a neighbouring street to avoid us having to cancel the repairs;
  • Try to avoid any sudden braking or steering manoeuvres on the new surface until it has fully dried;
  • Take care at junctions until we've replaced the give way and centre line road markings.

Work starts from Wednesday, July 17 and will continue for approximately one month, subject to weather conditions, at the following sites:
