Both residents and councillors have recently found out about this potential closure without any warning from Derbyshire County Council and have not yet been given any reasoning behind the decision.

The community centre is used for clubs such as the youth club which youngsters attend and enjoy as well as the boxing club which has been a well attended club for many years now. 

A meeting took place at the Community Centre two weeks ago where locals could express their opinions on the matter. 

Councillors Edward Sidall, Anthony Mckeown, Damien Greenhalgh and Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for High Peak Jon Pearce were also in attendance, answering questions from the public however, the question of “Why is this happening?” was left unanswered. 

The news has sparked national controversy and has got attention from BBC breakfast, with thousands of viewers tuning in to see users of the centre fight for the place they call a ‘second home’. 

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said: “We have been reviewing the way in which services are delivered in the Gamesley area for some time. 

“Since the nursery re-located to the school, we have been paying the running costs for two buildings in Gamesley, neither of which we are using ourselves. 

“This is unsustainable and efforts to fill the properties have been unsuccessful.

“We are continuing to review the various options available to us, so while it does look like we may close the building within the next few months we will make every effort to avoid doing so.

“We’ve had discussions with High Peak Borough Council, which owns the freehold, other partners and the community groups who use the building, and will continue these discussions in case we can find a way to keep the building open.”
