Firefighters from eight stations took almost 24 hours to put out a blaze on Crowden Moor, less than a week after warning of tinderbox conditions.
Crews from Glossop, New Mills, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Whaley Bridge, Bradwell and Hathersage, along with water carriers from Buxton and Clay Cross and a mountain rescue drone team raced to the scene just before 7pm on Thursday April 10.
The flames took hold of 4,000 square metres of woodland, with the fire teams staying until darkness in the remote spot off the A628 Woodhead Pass.
They returned on Friday morning to fully extinguish the fire, which also affected a conifer plantation.
Last week, the head of Glossop Fire & Rescue Service, Nick Lacey, warned against walkers taking disposable barbecues onto the moors: “Conditions are really dry and we’ve got plenty of wind.
“Fighting wildfires is a very hard and arduous task.
“Our crew works in a very, very hazardous environment to enable us to extinguish that fire.
“Support us, act responsibly, and keep our firefighters out of that risk.”
There is no confirmation yet of what started the fire.
