Farewell to Percy the peacock in Glossop

A part of Glossop has lost one of its most loved and popular personalities.

Percy the peacock, who was regularly seen strutting around the Sheffield Road and Queen’s Drive area, has died.

According to neighbours, the brightly coloured bird suddenly arrived ‘out of the blue’ more than a decade ago.

No one knows exactly when Percy, who was given the name by neighbours and residents on Sheffield Road, made Queen’s Drive his home.

It’s commonly believed that he went ‘fly-about’ from his owners and just turned up.

He had been strutting his stuff and waking sleepers from their slumbers with his high pitched call for more than ten years.

He had many narrow escapes as he walked slowly across Sheffield Road, avoided by startled drivers.

Percy set up home in a garage, lovingly being fed and watered by the garage owner.

Amazingly, Percy survived many bitterly cold and snowy winters, including the so-called ‘Beast From The East’ in 2018.
