Flying high for village's Apple Day

The village of Hayfield will play host to its annual Apple Day next weekend. 

It's being held at Hayfield Primary School on Swallow House Lane on Saturday, October 12, from 1pm to 4.30pm.  

The organisers are inviting villagers and other visitors to 'fly high' as kite flying is one of the new attractions for this year's event. 

Laurie James, from Sustainable Hayfield, who is one of the organisers, said: "We're delighted to confirm we've got a couple of experienced kite-fliers coming along to offer people the chance of experiencing kite flying for themselves, using their own kites – if they have any – or those the exhibitors are bringing with them.

"Kite flying is a lovely, peaceful, pastime and we hope that there’ll be a good deal of interest in acquiring, or refining, kite-flying skills." 

Another new addition this year is the chance to have a go at croquet in the school grounds, which has been organised by Buxton U3A Croquet Group. 

There will be the chance to develop some basic skills of the gentle sport under expert guidance. 

The popular festival has attracted a record of more than 50 stallholders and exhibitors already this year, but the organisers are still looking for more. 

They would be interested, in particular, to hear from parents who would like to have a stall or table selling pre-loved children's toys or clothes. 

"It makes so much sense to recycle perfectly serviceable items in this way and there's no charge for a table or stall," added Laurie. "It fits in well with our aim to have an event which celebrates living a bit more lightly on the land."
