Former High Peak Mayoress Margaret White has celebrated her centenary with a visit from the current Mayor.

Following an invitation from her family, Mayor Councillor Paul Hardy said he was delighted to join Margaret at her home in Chinley to mark the occasion of her 100th birthday on Thursday (15 July).

Margaret served as Mayoress of the Borough in 1983, when her husband Councillor Harry White was Mayor. 

She said: “I was thrilled that the Mayor had taken the time to visit and recognise my public service as a previous Mayoress for which I have many special memories of the community spirit across the High Peak. It was a very special day with visits from the Women’s Institute, family and friends and a birthday card from the Queen." 

Councillor Hardy presented Margaret with a bouquet of flowers and spent time talking with her about their shared experience of public office.

He said: “I was absolutely delighted to meet Mrs White and to help celebrate her special day with her family.

“It was lovely to hear her stories of her experiences - many of which we have in common already and others which myself and the Mayoress have to look forward to over the coming year.

“Being the first citizen of the Borough of High Peak is an honour and a pleasure – it’s a special place and it’s people like Mrs White that make it so. I wish her ongoing health and happiness.”

Margaret was an active member of the local Women’s Institute and plans are being made with them and Chinley Parish Council to plant a tree in the village to mark both her milestone birthday and her service to the High Peak.
