Full steam ahead with Glossop station spruce-up

The Friends of Glossop Station are getting ready for the official start of British Summer Time, which comes in on Sunday, by carrying on their award-winning work.

With lockdown starting to ease, the group has been given permission by rail company Northern to resume prettying up the Norfolk Street station.

It has meant chairman Neil Williams and his team - social distancing and wearing face masks - tidying up and re-planting the platform planters.

They have also been freshening up the flowers on the wall-hanging displays.

The next job for the group, which has won a number of Community Rail Partnership awards for its work in improving the look of the station and staging events, is tackling the trackside gardens.

Group member photographer John Kimpton, who also joins the team on regular Sunday cleaning and maintenance sessions, has also been playing his part in making the station more welcome to travellers.

He has put a display of his pictures in the waiting room gallery that range from group members busy on the station garden to the prize steam engine he once owned.

John said: “I have been taking photographs for 60 years. I started with a ‘box brownie’ but today I use some of the top end Canon kit.”
