Gamesley Early Excellence Centre Nursery School has received an award for how its staff are supporting the development of children's communication.
Over the past year, the staff at the Winster Mews nursery school have worked hard to complete the national Early Years Professional Development Programme to achieve the accreditation 'Communication Friendly Status'.
The staff team have been led by Sarah Warrington, Early Years Practitioner, who has completed the study and then led staff training events.
Staff are now applying techniques such as giving children more thinking time in conversations and asking fewer questions, which evidence shows improves early communication.
Research shows that the size of children's vocabulary at the age of five is a real indicator of their future success, including how well they will do in school, the likelihood of having mental health problems as an adult, and even the likelihood of going to prison.
Head teacher Anna Portman has decided to prioritise communication and language as a major part of the School Improvement Plan for another year.
She commented: "We have all learnt so much this year, so over the next year we want to embed this learning and share more of what we have learnt with our families and wider community."
