Gamesley pupils run 500 miles for cause close to their hearts

Big-hearted schoolchildren in Gamesley have been putting in the miles to raise funds for a worthy cause connected to what they have been learning about recently. 

Year 6 pupils at Gamesley Primary School decided to run 10 miles each over the course of the five-day school week, setting a target of 500 miles in total which they achieved. 

They have been learning about the topic 'Blood Heart' this term, including the importance of keeping their hearts healthy but unfortunately thousands of people are lost each year to heart problems.

The British Heart Foundation aims to fund research to help combat these issues but its funding and staffing has been severely cut because of Covid-19. 

The pupils at the Grindleford Gardens school wanted to help by raising £500 - £1 for every mile they ran - and managed to raise a fantastic £570 for the charity so it can continue its amazing work. 

Sarah Kuczaj, Year 6 teacher, said: "The topic we have studied this term has thoroughly inspired Year 6 and they have worked so hard over the last few weeks to make this happen. The children have put a huge effort into this fundraiser, both planning it themselves and taking part.

"They have been incredibly determined to do themselves proud and have really enjoyed raising money for such a worthy cause."
