General election candidates confirmed

All of the candidates standing in the 2019 General Election in the High Peak have now been confirmed.

Parties had until 4pm on Thursday (14 November) to confirm who will be standing in the election on Thursday 12 December. 

There will be five candidates in total - with two changing from the original names that were initially announced, according to High Peak Borough Council. 

David Lomax, from Whaley Bridge, will now be standing for the Liberal Democrats instead of Guy Kiddey, who said on Wednesday that he would stand down if the party didn't drop disciplinary proceedings against his colleague Tim Walker and after his election agent also resigned from the party.  

Meanwhile, Alan Graves, from Derby, will be the Brexit Party's candidate in place of Mark Nolan, who confirmed on Twitter on Wednesday that he had withdrawn due to personal reasons.

As expected, the former constituency MP Ruth George, from Whaley Bridge, will be standing for the Labour Party, while Robert Largan, of Glossop, will be the Conservative Party candidate and Robert Hodgetts-Haley, from Tintwistle, will stand for the Green Party in the High Peak. 

Last week, Chris Boyle stood down as the representative for the UK Independence Party (UKIP), who have decided not to field another candidate. 

It was only a three-cornered fight for the previous General Election back in June 2017, when Mrs George stood for Labour, Andrew Bingham for the Conservatives and Charles Lawley for the Lib Dems. 

Polling stations across the borough will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day as voters will get the chance to choose who will represent them as their Member of Parliament. 

People aged 18 and over are being urged to ensure they are registered to vote before the deadline on Tuesday 26 November.
