This March, Colin Davies and his friend Jake will embark on an 4000-mile journey from their home in Glossop all the way to Gambia, on two motorbikes.
Colin and Jake are partaking in the challenge in order to raise money for Help for Heroes charity. They added: “We don’t believe veterans get enough support and we are hoping that with this trip and your donations, together we can make a difference.”
The challenge will be completed on two old honda motorbikes with the ambition to do 4000 miles in 14 days. The duo will travel through France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Western Sahara Desert, Mauritania, Senegal and eventually, Gambia.
The bikes will cost £3,000 and they have had to rebuild the bikes the best they can in order to make them sustainable in the conditions across the counties they’ll be driving through.
Colin, who is an army veteran, commented: “We chose the charity because I am an army veteran and can see the good that they do for ex service personnel. The ride though started because of the Dakar rally and how we think only the rich can participate.”
He added: “Unfortunately both Jake and I are not rich one bit so we decided to do it ourselves on a couple of old bangers powered on hopes and broken dreams.
Then we thought we may as well get to Gambia, simply because we took the time off work and reckon we could get them that far and the people in Gambia really don't have a lot so motorbikes could really help a family out ,even if they sell/swap it whatever.”
Jake and Colin have set up a justgiving page with the hopes of raising £500 and so far, the pair have raised £400.
