Double Paralympic gold medal-winning cyclist Ben Watson was on hand to help celebrate with children at Charlesworth School who took on a Three Peaks Walking Challenge.

Organised by the Friends of Charlesworth School, the event raised hundreds of pounds for new reading books and saw the youngsters walk the equivalent height of Mount Everest twice.

During the summer, children and their families were asked to select three ‘peaks’, which they would like to walk and gathered sponsors for per metre/km/mile climbed above sea level.

They were asked to take a picture of their school jumper at each summit and send a message to FOCS to let them know the total distance achieved.

Ben, from Glossop, presented medals to the children who had taken part and brought along his gold Paralympic medals and race-winning bike.

Head teacher Philip Whiston said it was a real treat and had inspired pupils to pursue their dreams and put in hard work to achieve them.

“It was fantastic to hear his  story of how he overcame a disease that had left him effectively paralysed for four months as a teenager and how he went on to achieve such success on the international stage,” he said.

“The children asked mature questions and passed the medals around with great care.

“I am sure that the parents and grandparents present were proud of how polite our children were.

“It was lovely to celebrate our school community’s efforts across the summer in raising approximately £900 with such an event.”
