Glossop Heritage Trust to hold Autumn Open Evening

Glossop Heritage Trust is holding its Autumn Open Evening on October 22, 2024, from 7.30pm at Central Methodist Church, Chapel Street, Glossop.

There will be an illustrated talk by a guest speaker, Paul Beckmann, the great-grandson of Isaac and Harriet Jackson.

Isaac Jackson came to Glossop as a saddler. Alongside his business he invented a world-famous belt fastener for fixing belts on machinery in mills and factories. He moved to producing belt fasteners and other tools at factories at Holly Mount on Norfolk Street and later Hawkshead Mill, Old Glossop.

Paul’s talk is titled “Isaac and Harriet Jackson – WW1 Munitions Production in Hawkshead Mill, Old Glossop and its consequences”. It will include information on Isaac and Harriet’s background, as well as Isaac’s company’s role in converting his factory to help with the manufacture of munitions in the First World War.

A spokesperson said: “There will also be a new donation to the Trust on display. In 2023 an original etched copper plate of Holly Mount and Isaac Jackson’s Factory on Norfolk Street and Ellison Street was donated to the Trust. We commissioned Lauren Riley to hand print 30 prints from the copper plate.

“These prints have been produced as a numbered limited edition. Both the copper plate and the print will be on display at the open evening. The prints are A4 size and we will have them for sale on the night for £75.00 each.”

The talk is free and all are welcome.

  • The signs they are a changin'

It was the end of an era at Whitfield Community Centre this week as the old Derbyshire County Council signage was removed to make way for new ones. Whitfield Together, the group that bought the Centre for the community, is refreshing the Centre's image. Its new logo will soon go up on the front of the building. Gerry Dominey told us, "It seemed like a significant moment when we took the sign down. It was as if we were saying that the Centre is ours now and we can put our paw print on it. And that felt good."
