Glossop kid Betsy donates hair to help her friend

Eight year old Betsy Atherton has donated her hair to the Princess Trust and is raising money for the Lily Foundation.

The Lily Foundation are a charity that support families living with mitochondrial disease, a life limiting condition with no cure. Betsy chose this charity as one of her best friends Toby is living with the disease, he is registered blind, non verbal and can’t stand or walk. The parents were told he wouldn’t live to be 6 months old but 9 years later, Toby is still here.

His mum, Katie has set herself a challenge of raising £10,000 for the Lily Foundation by May next year and this inspired Betsy to help the cause as well.

As she has long hair, she has decided to donate this to the Princess Trust.

Betsy was both excited and nervous to have her hair cut and was “very quiet and then had the giggles during the cut” Katie said.

“She feels proud of herself for doing it and that she’s helped Toby.”  Katie added: “I find it hard to put into words how proud and touched I am by what she’s done. My heart could literally burst with love.

Although Betsy and her family aren’t related to us by blood, they are the family we’ve chosen and I love them all. We’re lucky to have friends that are so amazing.”
