Glossop theatre announces expansion plans

Partington Theatre is next to the former NatWest building.

Partington Players Theatre in Glossop has announced plans to expand - by purchasing the neighbouring NatWest building.

Under the proposals, the theatre plans to merge the two spaces into one centrally located performing arts hub.

This new project would give Glossopdale a state-of-the-art accessible theatre and multi-function arts space to fit the town’s growing needs.

Mark McDonough, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said: “Purchasing this building would see our little theatre expand with more community space, rehearsal, and storage areas, and most importantly make the theatre truly accessible to all.

“This is a very exciting opportunity which would make a huge difference to not just the theatre and its patrons, but to the entire Glossop community.”

What the new main entrance from High Street West would look like under the plans

Those behind the proposals believe the expansion would offer a unique venue that could be used by the wealth of talented actors, artists, singers and set builders based in the area.

As the town continues to grow, it would also provide a real alternative for entertainment to those who do not want to travel further afield.

The theatre project will support the development of the Town Hall and Victoria Arts Centre, along with the existing small performance venues across the area.

While the existing theatre has strong local partnerships in place, it will need public support, sponsors, and investors to give their support.

Partington Theatre is now asking the people of Glossopdale to their backing and to join them in upcoming fundraising efforts that will be needed to help fund the purchase of the bank building and create what they see as a much-needed local arts resource.

A GoFundMe page has been set up and people can donate here:

The NatWest branch was closed earlier this year after the bank determined it was no longer needed due to reduced demand as more people access banking online.
