Glossop to take part in Global Day of Action for the Climate

There will be demonstrations in favour of radical action to protect the climate in towns and cities all over the world on Saturday 6 November, and Glossop will be taking part.

The Global Day of Action takes place in the middle of the COP26 Climate Conference in Glasgow. The biggest event will be in Glasgow itself but there will be large marches and rallies in London and many other UK cities, including Manchester.

In Glossop, people will gather on the High Street at 10.30am with banners and placards calling for the government to take more serious and urgent steps than it is currently planning, in order to reduce carbon emissions and restore our natural environment.

Many of the group will then take the train to Manchester afterwards to join events in the city.

High Peak Green New Deal Co-ordinator Linda Walker said: "Boris Johnson likes to portray the UK as world leaders in tackling climate change, but the climate will not respond to promises of 'net zero' by 2050.

"We need to be rapidly reducing emissions right now and that means an immediate halt to investment in coal and oil; a dramatic increase in support for renewable energy; no new road building; providing reliable and cheap public transport; and insulating homes on a massive scale.

"Here in the Peak District we also have a great opportunity to lock CO2 into the land and allow nature to flourish if we invest in restoring peatland. The Government has taken a step in this direction and plans to restore 35,000 hectares, but there are three million hectares of peatland in this country so this needs to be urgently scaled up to make a significant difference."

The protest in Glossop is called by the Green New Deal Group, and supported by High Peak Stand Up to Racism, Glossop Peace Group, Unite Community and the local Labour and Green Parties.

They urge everyone to come out and join them in "calling for the world leaders meeting in Glasgow to take the actions needed to protect and preserve our planet for future generations".
