Glossop town centre could soon be getting a defibrillator

The Bureau on Henry Street in Glossop.

Efforts to site a potentially life-saving piece of equipment in the centre of Glossop are hopefully moving a step closer this week.

Plans were submitted for a defibrillator to be installed outside The Bureau on Henry Street, but objections were voiced by Derbyshire County Highways and High Peak Borough Council’s Conservation Officers.

Now a meeting is planned between the parties to looks at the issues and try to find a way forward.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh explained that the defibrillator was gifted to The Bureau from Glossopdale School when they moved to the newly built school in Hadfield and, by siting it on The Bureau building, it would be accessible at all times.

But the siting of an external AED (Defibrillator) cabinet on a listed building within the conservation area is proving problematic.

DCC are concerned about the overhang on the pavement while the Borough’s Conservation Officer is concerned the impact of fixing a large yellow box would damage the stone and visually harm the architectural significance of the building suggesting alternatives are explored.

Funding for siting the defibrillator has already been secured thanks to a £500 donation from Glossopdale Masonic Lodge and funding from Cllr Greenhalgh's HPBC Councillors Initiative Fund.

A meeting between the parties is due to take place on Wednesday afternoon (16 June).
