After the success of its Sixth Form students in their academic and vocational A-levels, Glossopdale School had some "excellent and well-deserved achievements" to celebrate on GCSE results day too.

The nervous wait for the Hadfield-based school's Year 11 students was finally over on Thursday morning (12 August) as they received their GCSE and BTEC qualifications. 

In the second year of Covid disruption to exams, teacher-assessed grades were used having been calculated against a national standard and approved by the exam boards. The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.

The school said in a statement: "Students have surmounted many obstacles over the past two years, demonstrating determination and maturity in ways we could not have foreseen at the beginning of their GCSE journey.

"We are especially pleased that the majority of students will return to us in September at Glossopdale Sixth Form. Tuesday’s ‘A’ Level results were so impressive, we look forward to the Class of 2023 proudly achieving just as well."

Some notable successes at Glossopdale include Lyla Galloway with seven Grade 9s and four Grade 8s; Lucas Habgood with two Grade 9s, six Grade 8s, one Grade 7 and two Grade 6s; and India Hazelwood with nine Grade 9s and one Grade 8. 

Meanwhile, Shannon Jarratt achieved two Distinction*, one Grade 9, five Grade 8s and three Grade 7s, while Finley Kelly got three Grade 9s and seven Grade 7s; Amy Ley achieved one Distinction*, seven Grade 9s, one Grade 8 and one Grade 7; and Tommy Norton achieved one Distinction*, one Grade 9, six Grade 8s, two Grade 7s and one Grade 6.

Elsewhere, Ella Peel secured one Distinction*, one Grade 9, five Grade 8s and three Grade 7s; Harry Relton achieved one Distinction*, one Grade 9, two Grade 8s, five Grade 7s, one Grade 6 and one Grade 5; Thomas Susca got three Grade 9s, four Grade 8s, two Grade 7s and one Grade 6; and Josie Swan achieved eight Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and one Grade 7.

Students who made the most progress are: Freddie Entwisle, Amy Gambles, James Lee, Sally McBride, Mckenzie McGrath, Katie Mellor, Kyra Parvin, Claudia Quimby, Rebecca Roberts, Madeline Scriven and Emily Wilkinson.

Head teacher Debbie McGloin was full of praise for the students following the 'extraordinarily difficult circumstances of the past 18 months'.

She said: "These results reflect their ability, ambition and determination to succeed. On top of the normal pressures of GCSE study they have endured 15 months of disrupted education and they have had to cope and adapt to significant changes in the way they have had to access learning.

"However, through this they have become more independent than ever in their time management and organisation. Finally, they had to prepare for many rigorous assessments, the pressure on them has been enormous but they have coped amazingly well.

"They deserve huge credit as do their teachers who have worked with great professionalism and commitment to support students throughout the pandemic and to then assess them for these important qualifications following the government’s decision to cancel public exams for the second year in a row.

"It would be no exaggeration to describe this year as extraordinary, but we are very confident that we’ve nurtured a cohort of young people who will be able to adapt quickly in a constantly changing world; they have shown impressive reserves of strength and resilience in overcoming adversity and we are immensely proud of them all."
