Grant boost for Glossop's heritage halls

Plans described as 'once in a generation' to transform Glossop's heritage halls are set to go ahead after the project received £2m in funding.

The cash boost comes from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership via their Getting Building Fund allocation.

The High Peak Borough Council led project will bring the town hall, market hall and Municipal Buildings up to modern standards - creating jobs and new spaces for entrepreneurs and micro-businesses alongside the introduction of energy saving technologies and fibre broadband.

Council leader Cllr Anthony Mckeown said: “We’re delighted to secure this significant sum – it means our ambitious plans for the transformation of these much-valued historic buildings will become reality in the next few years.

“The redevelopment of the Glossop Halls complex is the key to unlocking the enormous potential the town has to be a hub for food and drink, leisure and the creative industries and is the catalyst to delivering the thriving, vibrant town centre that we all want to achieve.

“It’s just the start of an exciting new chapter for Glossop and the ideal tonic at the end of a challenging year for residents and businesses. As we all look to the future following Covid, this project couldn’t have come at a better time and we thank D2N2 for granting this funding and for the backing they have shown for our proposals.”

The funding will mean that as well as the existing planned works to replace the roofs at the Municipal Buildings and market hall, it will enable the council to:

  • Refurbish the town hall and install lifts
  • Build a new mezzanine floor in the market hall providing new office space.

Cllr Damien Greenhalgh, deputy leader and executive councillor for regeneration, tourism and leisure, said: “We know how important these buildings are to the local community and this funding means our long-standing proposals to invest in them to return them to community use will be realised.

“These rejuvenated buildings will be the jewel in our crown.”
