Members of High Peak Against Racism were out in Norfolk Square on Saturday, calling for asylum seekers to be offered safe routes and to be allowed to work.
A recent opinion poll showed that the majority of people in the UK would support safe routes being set up for asylum seekers, so they don't have to risk their lives in small boats.
Group Co-ordinator Linda Walker, said "We are seeking to dispel myths about asylum seekers and refugees. The UK only takes 1% of the world's refugees and the Government provides very few opportunities for them to come here by a safe route."
Fellow campaigner Karen Smith, said “We were able to have some good conversations with people including with those that didn't initially agree with us. We were able to find common ground and dispel some of the misinformation out there.”
Another member of the group, Angela Dale, added "We are also supporting the Refugee Council's campaign to allow asylum seekers to work. They have many skills to offer and it would reduce our costs and help them to integrate into the community, so everyone would benefit."
The group would like to invite anyone interested in supporting their campaigns for a Fairer Immigration System, for Welcoming Diversity and for Justice for Palestine to get in touch by emailing: highpeakagainstracism@gmail.com
