High Peak Mayor gets first-hand experience of Glossop MRT's work

High Peak's Mayor got an insight into the dedicated work of one of his chosen charities as he volunteered to be a casualty for Glossop Mountain Rescue Team.

Councillor Paul Hardy said he enjoyed the experience and saw the full extent of what's involved in helping people on the hills.

He said: "It was quite an experience. Seeing first-hand what GMRT do was eye-opening."

A Glossop MRT member commented: "His acting skills were as good as we have seen from a volunteer casualty which really brought a sense of realism to the trainees on the exercise."

It was the first night exercise of the training season for Glossop MRT, which is one of the Mayor's chosen charities along with Partington Players Theatre and the Thomas Theyer Foundation.

A spokesperson for Glossop MRT said: "It gave him a real insight into the how the volunteers at GMRT operate, enabling them to show their skills, capabilities and commitment. Twenty-two team members were involved in the exercise, from planning to cleaning down the kit. The team committed over 100 hours to the exercise.

"GMRT are pleased to be associated with The Mayor’s charity fundraising, working with him on many events during the year."

The full Glossop MRT were deployed from four locations to search for Cllr Hardy, who was supposed to have returned home on Saturday (23 October) in time to attend a mayoral function at 4pm.

He was found at 7.30pm in an area above Shelf Benches in Old Glossop and treated for a lower leg injury, before being stretchered to the awaiting mountain rescue ambulance.

Glossop MRT members were stood down at 10pm.

If people would like to donate to GMRT directly, the team will inform Cllr Hardy of the amount raised so he can add it to his fundraising tally for his time in office.
